Ian has a broad range of sporting interests and experience including rock climbing, scuba diving, kayaking, mountain biking, triathlon and the martial arts. Rowing has played a considerable part in his early life as he competed regularly in both fours and eights becoming Captain of a small but successful boat club. Recently he has become interested in ultra events and has completed the 75 mile Jurassic Coast Challenge and the 145 mile non-stop Grand Union Canal Race from Birmingham to London earlier this year.  Ian has been looking at the possibility of an ocean row for about two years and a visit to Woodvale to discuss the possibility of the North Atlantic Race in 08 opened up the opportunity to take part in the Oyster Shack Ocean Challenge.

Currently a serving Army Officer of 17 years Ian has a broad experience of demanding tasks and challenging circumstances.  Though particularly motivated to achieve the record the sheer, selfish ‘old style adventure’ and the chance to test his personal limits is also a great driving factor.  Fortunately Ian has a definite masochistic streak and previous experience indicates that bloody-minded stubbornness can overcome good sense and the body’s desire to stop!  Married to a sympathetic, understanding and patient wife and a father of two young boys Ian is particularly keen to make the crossing as quick as possible!
